Abstract
Plowman has curated three projects, ‘Beacon’ 18.09.04-09.10.04, ‘sense of place, place of sense’ 11.09.05-02.10.05, catalogue essays by Plowman and Sally O’Reilly (ISBN 1- 860502- 03 -2). ‘no place, like home’ 09.09.06-01.10.06, catalogue essays by Plowman and Sotiris Kyriacou (ISBN 0 –95553626- 0 -1). In 2007 Plowman commissioned Sally O’Reilly to curate the fourth project ‘990: General History of Other Areas’ 19.10.07-21.10.07. Beacon is a project whereby the research is carried out through Plowman’s curatorial practice in which he is interested in engaging critically with urban cultural values within the context of presenting contemporary art within the rural landscape of Lincolnshire. Since 2004 Beacon has received funding in excess of £180,000, Arts Council East Midlands being the major together with ERDF funding through Lincolnshire Creative Solutions Initiative. Other funding includes four district councils, University of Lincoln and private sponsorship.The project aims to offer a new perspective on contemporary rural culture through collaboration between curator, artist, site and audience. Plowman has been invited to give presentations about Beacon to the following: ‘an’ Fast Forward Conference, Derby 23-24 April 2006, Creative Rural Economy Conference 10-13 September 2006, University of Lancaster, (with Nicola Streeten). Plowman delivered a paper entitled ‘Reciprocity and Superiority’ to Common Work’ a conference organised by Stirling University 19-20 April 2007. Plowman was invited to write a critical essay, ‘Local and Convivial’ in the publication entitled ‘Underscan’ ISBN 0-9781347-0-2 in which he furthers his ideas around an urban and rural art discourse. All projects have received local, national press and radio coverage. Including a critical review of ‘no place’ like home’ by David Lillington in an magazine, November 2006.
