Abstract

Work was shown at East International 2003, the open submission exhibition that takes place annually at Norwich Gallery, Norfolk. The selectors were Toby Webster, director of the Modern Institute, Glasgow, and the artist Eva Rothschild. The exhibition reflected their interest in painting and sculpture; no photography was included and Lamb was the sole artist working in video. 30 artists were selected, including Ruth Claxton, Kate Davis, Richard Hughes, Gareth Jones, Camilla Low, Colin Lowe and Roddy Thomson, Peter McDonald, Alex Pollard, James Pyman and Toby Ziegler. Lamb presented ‘Giallo’, a video installation named after a genre of Italian cinema. Consisting of a single take of a cut glass lamp fitted with yellow bulbs, the piece explored surrealist notions of visual fascination, suggesting a close-up shot of a rapidly moving eye through the use of disorientating camera movement and oversaturated colour effects. A number of publications accompanied the exhibition: Slimvolume commissioned a poster from each participating artist as part of a limited edition portfolio that was sold in the gallery, and an exhibition catalogue was published by Norwich Gallery [ISBN 1 872482 63 5]. Additionally, at the invitation of curator Lynda Morris, Lamb produced Norwich Gallery Dispatch 94 comprising a text piece and an essay. A series of talks took place before and during the course of the exhibition; Lamb gave a presentation of his work at the East Discourse event that preceded the opening.
