Abstract
This paper describes a novel method of designing the HP compressor of a two-stage turbocharger using a 1-D code coupled with an optimisation algorithm. The 1-D code solves relevant thermodynamic and fluid dynamics equations given geometric variables, the target pressure ratio and the operating speed as inputs . A multi-objective optimiser is used to return potential designs that will maximise compressor efficiency and minimise deviation from the target mass flow. These designs are then taken forward for detailed 3D-CFD analysis. An example based on a HP compressor impeller and vaneless diffuser is presented to demonstrate the potential of this 1-D methodology.
