Abstract
This report details the findings of an architectural paint research exercise on the colonnade of the Service Wing at Kenwood Ho
use, Hampstead. The Service Wing was built by George
Saunders between 1793 and 1797 for the 2
nd
and 3rd Earls of Mansfield. This research project aims at identifyin
g the earliest decorative scheme surviving on the columns and cor
nice
of the colonnade and record the subsequent decorative history.
This investigation was undertaken by Neilian (Ian) C. Crick & M
ichael G. Smith, Senior Research Fellows, Crick Smith
Conservation, University of Lincoln. The research was commissioned by Lucy Ratcliffe of English Heritage.
This research is based upon the cross-sectional analysis of a se
ries of paint fragments removed from selected elements of the c
olonnade. The mounted fragments were viewed under
simulated daylight and UV illumination.
Basic chemical spot testing was undertaken
to identify the paint systems used. Extens
ive material analysis was not undertaken as part of this
research exercise.
The findings of this investigation are detailed more completely within this report.
