Abstract

Exhibition of works of four artists, initiated curated, organised and administered by Charnley. Life Below, Landscapes Beneath Consciousness explores the potential for unease on a visceral level. These bodies of work use the raw material that can be found within an urban or domestic situation to consider the relationship between the immaterial and physical worlds. Echoes of the unconscious ring throughout the works, thus confounding a purely rational interpretation. These images effect both a representation and a transformation of their subject. Each piece presents a form that has been somehow dislocated, so that it may acquire other kinds of value, generating the possibility of fictional or cultural resonance. Through the process of image making the original subject is aestheticised, exaggerating the natural in its most sensual dimension. The exhibition toured to Floating Gallery, Winnipeg, Canada 08/05/03-06/06/2003 Charnley’s work in the exhibition was a development of a wallpaper frieze selected for the large scale exhibition East of Eden, Spacex Gallery and other venues, Exeter 2001. Other exhibitors included Abigail Reynolds, David Mabb, Emma Todd, Edwina Fitzpatrick, Professor Thomas Joshua Cooper Damien Hirst and Andy Goldsworthy. Contemporary Landscapes. Folder of Alternator Gallery catalogue essays by Portia Priegert ISBN: 0-9682197-7-2. Co exhibitors included Logie F, McCarthy P and Wright A.
