Abstract

A solo exhibition of drawings, all 30 x 30cm, at the Leonard Pearlstein Gallery, Philadelphia USA. The catalogue includes an introduction by Gallery Director Ephraim Russell and an essay by Sarah Steinwachs. The exhibition has also been shown as a solo show at the Drawn-Out Gallery, International Drawing Research Institute, NSW Australia Ist – 23rd August 2007.This body of work evolved in response to the experience of drawing as a reflective practice which focused on peripheral and contextual circumstances in previous studies, as a starting point for critique. These peripheral circumstances were regarded as a secondary element of visual encounter, references that are on the periphery, the outer limits of focused attention. These new drawings set out to further examine the principle of an outside edge, considering that which is not perceived to be of primary value, be it visual or otherwise, possibly due to its role and physical location. The work intended to consider hierarchies of importance in relation to how information in received and then organised. A concern with value(s) preoccupied other earlier works but through an interest in objects, here worth is explored through apparently intuitive decision. Additionally, the physical scale of the work is intentionally intimate as to simultaneously profile the contribution of the drawing process as well as the outcome of the image. Each image is a many layered construction, arising from a constant searching to find the drawing, a discourse between an ‘outside edge’ and a drawing process. The drawings were presented at a LAND2 seminar held at the University of Leeds in March 07. LAND2 is a practice-led national research network of practitioners motivated by landscape/ place-oriented art practice.
