Abstract
This was a solo exhibition at the Universidad de Concepcion, comprising 9 new works, namely the Giszipchec Series and 11 earlier works of the Alvin Collection, shown under the collective title ‘Special Features’. under the collective title ‘Special Features’ The catalogue for The Giszipchec Series ISBN 1 860502 04 0 includes an introduction by Eileen Kelly Millan and an interview between the artist and the painter Lois Wallace, in English with Spanish translations. The Giszipchec Series of work, all 30 x 42cm, was a continuation of themes begun in The Alvin Collection, and subject matter was again collected from known landscapes and other environments. Concerns were two fold; what can drawing as process contribute to new insights, and how might redundant, anonymous matter assume a new significance, whilst retaining a sense of its intrinsic qualities. This particular series of drawings focused on material substantially more anonymous and diverse than that which motivated The Alvin Collection. These objects were carefully selected homeless fragments and although equally small, offer little clue to their original scale or function. The drawings were also informed by a remembered light or the geography of a place where an object was rescued, but worked to avoid literal description of the subject matter, aspiring to embodiment and translation rather than embellishment.
