Abstract

Wikis and blogs appear to be ideally suited for use in a range of assessment formats (project-based, problem-based, enquiry-based or case-based learning scenarios) enabling the tools and goals for students to engage in collaborative and individual knowledge building. This kind of pedagogical design is based on the idea that “in order to learn, students have to create” (Schneider et al., 2003).

Whilst wikis and blogs are extremely powerful tools in teaching and assessment, the same flexibility can also 'present significant problems and challenges to students and academics' (Bruns & Humphreys, 2005).

Academics have been implementing these types of assessments for nearly 10 years and a body of knowledge and experience has been created. It's time to reflect on this. The purpose of this workshop is to identify key questions to be addressed in the planning of wiki and blog assessments, and to invite discussion and sharing of good practice in these areas. The discussion within the workshop will be assimilated through appropriate technology for all to access.
