Abstract
The English passive has been studied from various perspectives, many of which come
up with different results and offer a range of rather specialised explanations and theories.
If instead the acquisition of the passive is treated within a new cognitive framework,
in which the passive construction is viewed as a category which displays typicality
effects, separate psychological and linguistic findings can be integrated in a
single framework. A semantic and concept-based approach for the passive and its acquisition
can thus be provided.
