Abstract
This chapter provides the conceptual and historical context for the rest of the book. The authors argue that teaching in public provides a framework within which teaching in classrooms and collaboration between student and teacher can be located within the wider debate about the nature and purposes of higher education and the relationship between higher education and the state.
