Abstract
Research essay based on my keynote at an international conference on gender aspects of European modernity held at the University of Hradec Králové. It is a theoretical essay with strong aspects of intellectual history, dealing with the complex ways in which Czech intellectual context of last twenty years embraced the concept of gender as an analytical category as well the (equally complex ways) in which it recently began to embrace the impulses of international development of masculinity studies.
