Abstract

Over recent years the term ‘care pathway’ has been used in a variety of ways with various intentions. It has been used to describe various concepts from guidelines and protocols to general descriptions of a patient’s journey or high-level process maps of services and processes of care. Consequently it has become difficult to interpret the expression ‘integrated care pathway’ in a consistent way. In response to this ambiguity it is therefore important to define clearly what an integrated care pathway actually is both within this text, and in relation to other literature.
