Abstract

Despite a range of targeted initiatives the profi le of the construction industry workforce has shown little, if any, change over the last 20 years. It seems that the sector’s workforce is still largely white, male and able-bodied. This situation means that the industry is failing to exploit the potential pool of recruits and as such may be missing out on highly skilled and committed employees. This chapter brings together a range of international literature from construction, and human resource management (HRM) more generally, to address the importance of equality, diversity, inclusion (EDI) and worklife balance (WLB) issues for the construction sector, drawing upon both employer and employee perspectives. It also provides a critique of current practices within the industry.
