Abstract
This chapter critically questions the achievability of transformative education for sustainability. It will argue that without an associated level of meaningful scientific literacy, across a broad range of topics - something that has yet to be widely achieved - students will lack the basis for making rational, scientifically informed, choices regarding sustainability. Thus, whilst transformative education for sustainability might be seen as highly desirable it will, arguably, prove to be just as elusive a chimera as has been the pursuit of widespread, meaningful, scientific literacy.
