Abstract

In the last few years, the cohort of students that have entered study at the Durban University of Technology have changed. They are still the same students from the same places, but the backgrounds have changed. Lack of basic education at school level, a gap in the demographics due to HIV AIDS and similar, and the changed circumstances of first time tertiary students add to the complexity of technology and its advantages and disadvantages.
This paper discusses the challenges faced and the means by which there is potential for addressing them in teaching and learning.
