Abstract

This book looks at the movie industry and at the labour intensive but fascinating process of making a feature film. It examines each stage in the production of a film, from initial idea through to the final cut and screening, and highlights the main activities that take place along the way. The book not only looks at the work of prominent people in the film world, such as directors and actors, but also describes the equally important but less high profile contributions of the gaffer, best boy and key grip.

Part of a series dealing with various aspects of the media, ‘Media Wise’, these books would be an excellent classroom resource for students or teachers. Starting with an overview of the form and functions of the topic, the books quickly progress to examine the technology, processes, people and ethics involved in each area. The text is supplemented with many colour photographs and sidebars containing ‘Media Facts’ and quotations from people working in the media. Well designed and laid out, these break up the text nicely so that the books are informative without being stale. Of particular note are the ‘Job Profiles’ scattered throughout the books, which go into more detail on key positions within the industry. These books would also make a good resource for those hoping to set up a school/class newspaper or internet project, as they lay out the structures involved and look at the issues that arise.

All in all, these books provide a great overview of the many faces of the media and, although short, they encourage the reader to examine the motivations behind the content.
