Abstract

The aggregation of nitrogen defects in synthetic diamond was simulated using a Monte Carlo technique. The model reproduced experimental data for the case when no transition metal defects are present in the diamond and the aggregation follows second order kinetics. When nickel impurities are included they release interstitials which enhance the mobility of the nitrogen and so accelerate the rate of aggregation. A barrier to the formation of nitrogen pairs from nitrogen interstitial/substitutional pair complexes is necessary to reproduce the observed aggregation rates. At higher temperatures (1500 °C) nitrogen aggregates around the nickel and significant concentrations of nickel-nitrogen complexes are observed. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
