Abstract
This chapter examines Stephen Spender's 1938 play 'Trial of a Judge', using it as a catalyst the understand the (dis)appearance of fascism on the stage in 1930s Britain. Its central claim is that so-called poetic drama should not only be read in parallel to other modernist innovations in Continental Europe, but that the plays in this genre can really only be understood through their performance conditions.
