Abstract

‘Stayawake Pill (Brand 27) and Outside of the Periphery (Brand 20)’, the output is in the form of new and innovative photographic works for the book Soon: The Brands of tomorrow. Selected by the editors the artist was one of forty “leading artists, photographers, advertisers and creative thinkers from around the globe … commissioned to create advertising for brands that will answer the needs of society in the future”. The aim was to produce a synthesis of forward thinking, creative visual and written works that are proactive and address emerging dilemmas relating to corporate branding and the construction of future consumer identities. Two ‘brands’ were commissioned of the artist – rand 20 ‘outside of the periphery’ and Brand 27 ‘Stay awake pill’. For ‘Outside of the periphery’ the artist worked with the New York based design company, One nine, and produced a series of computer manipulated images of urban environments which were projected back into those environments and re-photographed to produce two full bleed double page spreads. For the ‘Stay awake Pill’ the artist worked with Still Media on the design and Sadie Plant who wrote the text. “… the ‘Stayawake Pill’ gives us eight hour sleep in two hours. Not only will the pill be a power brand, but it will spawn new enterprises to utilise the extra time”. A series of four photo-digital images invoking floating, dreaming and drifting states were produced to form full bled double page spreads with text. The resulting book was produced using innovative printing techniques, such as thermo sensitive links for the cover and a variety of unique off-line varnish finishes for the inside pages. The artist produced the photography/digital imaging for print and projection.
