This chapter developed from a paper delivered at a conference held in Rome in March 2003 at the British School at Rome, entitled ‘The Uses and Abuses of Caesar’ and organised by Maria Wyke, Professor of Latin at University College London, and Christopher Pelling, Regius Professor of Classics at the University of Oxford. Material for the paper was drawn, initially, from my PhD research on the architecture and urbanism in Rome during the Pontificate of Julius II. Further research, used for the paper, forms part of a more substantial chapter in a forthcoming book entitled ‘renovatio urbis: Architecture, Urbanism and Ceremony in the Rome of Julius II’ which is currently being reviewed by Routledge.
