Abstract

The first edition of the book came out at a critical time in the history of Videogame Art, when its existence as a field was clear, but its trajectory less so. The passage of time since the first edition has allowed us – in this expanded and revised introduction - to more clearly trace the evolution of videogame art since its inception, and through doing this, identify the cultural and technological factors that shaped its development; the themes and common threads of this diverse form, and the tensions that exist within it as a medium.
