Abstract

This chapter is included in the final edition of Methuen’s Modern British Playwriting series (due to be published September 2013). This edition, The 2000s, is edited by Professor Dan Rebellato and is intended to combine critical analyses of play-texts alongside primary material such as early drafts, interviews with playwrights and their collaborators and considerations of contemporary debates/critical receptions.

This chapter provides an overview of Stephens’s work in the first decade of the twenty-first century, focusing specifically upon the writing and production of three plays: One Minute (2003), Motortown (2006) and Pornography (2008). It supplies previously unpublished material in the form of early drafts of scenes from Motortown; draws on interviews conducted with Stephens himself as well as four of his directors: Gordon Anderson, Ramin Gray, Sebastian Nuebling and Sarah Frankcom; problematises the critical reception of Stephens’s plays and situates his work within contemporary debates over ‘in-yer-face’ theatre, the limits of social realism and Stephens’s reception on the continent, particularly Germany.
