Abstract

This performance was presented at the following venues: London, UK (2008, Laban), Porto Portugal, (2008, Maus Habitos), Porto, Portugal (2008, Sweet and Tender Fragmens of Experience), Tilburg, The Netherlands (2009, Festival Incubator), Manchester, UK (2010 Greenroom), Massachusetts (2011, Harvard University: Educational Bodies: The Performance of Gender and Sexuality in Academia). This Performance/Lecture in its entirety draws from the theories by Susan Sontag on the reality and performativity of documentation. Although Susan Sontag explicitly speaks about photography I try to enlarge the notion what that document might.
Therefore two parallel universes were created that coexist and complement each other. The one is the choreography of a fictitious past moment breaking the boundaries between now, before and later and the other is the space of a live documentation of time.
I chose for the medium of performance lecture, which, through its self-reflective, mirroring character can serve as a caption to the past, present and future. This self-visceral and narcissistic performance lecture investigates the medium of performance lectures from Carolee Schneeman’s 1968 “Naked Action Lecture” to Xavier Le Roy’s “Self- Unfinished” (1999) in order to create an affective response upon the self-reflective and mirroring character of the medium itself. A thorough investigation on the stereotypes of the mode of a performance lecture has allowed me to comment on the Austinian performativity of performance lectures. By using Susan Sontag’s writing as a platform for discussion, I dive into a transgressive performance of museology and documentation to construct the subjectivity of a performance lecturer by excluding or eliminating myself to fit the form. Although Susan Sontag explicitly speaks about the performativity of photography, I try to enlarge the notion of what that document might be to include acts of sexuality and social role construction.
