Abstract
The purpose of the paper is to consider the role and function of international law in supporting the developmental opportunities of developing States and, more importantly, in improving the life-chances of the peoples of such countries. The objective of the paper is not to consider the minutiae of the law in this area but to "idealise" this law; to raise one's eyes above the day-to-day parapet and to consider some of the broader themes that comprise the principled framework within which such law should operate.
