Abstract

This book analyses the representation of men in early modern English university drama. It assesses the role of academic play-texts in the construction of early modern male subjectivity, especially that of students, and evaluates the importance of performance in the formation of this subjectivity. It pays attention to the way that the plays deal with their academic and social contexts; to their engagement with literary and dramatic traditions; to the influence of their local and national settings; and to their relationship with university authority and royal patronage.
