Abstract
A collaborative art practice exhibition of a large-scale installation following an Arts Council funded International residency by Dutton and Swindells. The conceptual thinking and initial enquiry was developed over a three month long international artist residency programme at Ssamzie Contemporary Art Space in Seoul ( January to March 2008 ). The residency was open call and awarded to Dutton and Swindells following application and interview after which the artists were awarded an Arts Council England grant of £23,400 to support the development of new work during the residency period. This output explored artistic production through the application of what were described as ‘unruly’ methodologies where animals and human-animals inhabited the artists’ studio and exchanged pathologies. Adopting an ‘animal’ sensibility of perceived ‘unruliness’ and relative unpredictability began to challenge dominant habits and modes of production of both the artists and artworks themselves and this challenge an understanding of knowledge production. The research orientated towards the limits of reason in what Heidegger called ‘primate poetics’. There were a number of smaller scale manifestations of the work at Ssamzie Space and Incubator space in Seoul but the main resulting public installation was a large scale exhibition at Kuando Museum of Fine Arts in Taipei in 2009. The exhibition took the form of a sprawling installation of collaged objects, processes and materials consisting of over fifty artefacts including photographs, prints, vinyl wall texts, sound works, digital video and animations. Dutton and Swindells exhibition in Taipei was reviewed in Photonet Magazine (South Korea),The Work of Dutton and Swindells, January 2010 issue. Dutton’s curatorial work was also informed by this output as he went onto curate Unruly Objects at LGP In Coventry, and Unspeaking Engagement and Possession. The artists' book ‘The Institute of Beasts’ was published by Site Gallery and distributed by Cornerhouse books ISBN 978 1 899926 13 5 in 2011
