Abstract

UnMasterclass is a weekly series of short videos featuring the artist painting a 'copy' of a famous painting by a past master-painter. Each UnMasterclass (2011) represents an unlearning of how to paint. My tutors best advice on how to paint was to go to galleries and try and figure out how past masters had constructed their paintings, to learn from them. UnMasterclass questions whether in the age of jpegs and the internet if a new type of (un)learning how to paint through looking at reproductions is emerging. Each video is supported by a piece of writing that collectively reveals the nuances of the overall work whilst mimicking a snapshot view of culture when singularly seen and read.
