Abstract

We welcome the fine paintings of Michael Healey - our first Scottish colourist, who follows in the footsteps of Cadell, Peploe, Fergusson and Hunter. They were all taught in France and knew first hand the French Post Impressionists and Fauves. They brought this contemporary aspect of colourful painting back to Scotland before the First World War and the four art schools became imbedded in this tradition. Whistler and Sargent also had a huge influence. Thus we see a tradition of strong draughtmanship, behind an unlaboured painting technique, that relies often on atmospheric colour and light for its drama.
