Abstract

This chapter explores the devastating fire of 1671 in the Monastery of El Escorial in Spain and its reconstruction in relation to royal image-making and the Pietas Austriaca. It also examines the theoretical thinking in relation to architecture at Charles II of Spain's court through an analysis of coeval manuscripts and printed books that chart the fire and reconstruction of the palace-monastery.
