Abstract

Since winning the BSC Learning and Teaching Award in 2014 this paper will discuss institutional exemplars of good practice in pedagogy, assessments and the impact of the ‘Lincoln effect’, as well as considering some of the challenges that this creates. A core part of our successes have resulted from the institutional embedding of ‘Student as Producer’ (Neary and Winn 2009), which has shaped our teaching practice and innovation over the past 10 years. Reflecting on how we have progressed and importantly where this places us within Higher Education today, we seek to develop fresh forms of teaching and course development strategies, particularly establishing links with the student and wider community through curriculum and programme design. Module developments within the curriculum, initially starting with employability have provided student engagement opportunities for students to be producers and researchers. Recent developments in curriculum design have further secured links with the community through Youth justice and Policing as well as continuing to offer opportunities through the bespoke Lincoln Award with forthcoming initiatives with Lincoln Action Trust and HMP Lincoln. Broadening the ‘Lincoln effect’ to work with local authorities and services re-establishes links initially made with the Criminology in the Professions (employability) module 10 years ago and expands the impact of research engaged teaching. These strategies are not without their problems however which will also be discussed in the paper. In essence, this reflective discussion addresses the benefits of being a critical academic friend with external organisations and the positives of not being risk averse in how your criminology programme provision develops.
