Abstract

The new South Africa has a strong discourse of re-nationalisation and the formation of a common identity, and whilst legislations exist which are intended to preserve and house archives, museums and special collections, the will to achieve this is carried out within a specific political context, meaning that funds to be allocated for these projects are often much less considered than budgets for housing, education and social services. This paper draws heavily on personal experience in working on community projects in Georgetown, Edendale, and Mpophomeni, and the challenges faced in achieving access to funds in addition to access to support.
