Abstract

Society has changed: more so in South Africa in which a demographic complexity has emerged since 1994, which challenges the conventional position and purpose of museums which are remnants of colonial cities. In addition a continual discourse about heritage and language adds to the means by which museums need to change in order to embrace the new multi-cultural, multi-lingual society.

This paper explore the potential of experience as an inclusive means by which some of these challenges can be overcome, drawing heavily on museums such as the Denis Sievers Museum which rely on interpretation and visceral experience, rather than a conventional display which is graphically and textually interpreted.
