Abstract

Student partnership activity can be distinguished as being either engagement in teaching and learning activities or engagement in quality enhancement and assurance. This paper builds on the findings of research at the University of Lincoln, which adopted a multi-case study, mixed methods approach to explore the pedagogical practices that foster a culture of partnership. It emerged that students and staff did not differentiate readily between these dimensions, but described a more holistic form of engagement covering all aspects of university life and beyond. Influenced by systems theory, a model of student partnership is proposed which identifies the contexts of partnerships across various levels in and beyond the institution: within the curriculum, at the periphery of the curriculum, in and of the university and beyond the university. This model serves as a dialogic tool to facilitate discussion amongst staff and students as they develop and implement institutional strategy and partnership working.
