Abstract

This paper will investigate potentially risk-related and protective demographic and psychological factors associated with child sexual exploitation material (CSEM) offending behaviour, concerning CSEM users’ personality traits, sexual behavior and interests, offending behavior, offending motives, and modus operandi. Participants were recruited within the UK (i.e., the Lucy Faithfull Foundation and the National Probation Service) and within Germany from the Prevention Project Dunkelfeld, a service offering preventative treatment for people attracted to children and/ or adolescents. This study provides the first empirical validation and expansion of Seto’s Motivation-Facilitation (M-F) model, the first theoretical model unique to CSEM offending behaviour, and aims to systematically identify differences between those CSEM users whose offending is linked to the contact-offence against a child (contact-driven) and those whose CSEM offending remains within the online space (fantasy-driven). The presentation will provide insight into preliminary results from this large-scale data analysis, and explore clinical, risk-related, and theoretical implications for the assessment and treatment of CSEM users.
