Recent decades have seen a proliferation of the term, 'tourist destination'. Improbable places, such as industrial cities and isolated rural environments, have become legitimate places to visit. At the same time, traditional tourist destinations such as coastal resorts have declined in popularity. There is a shift from an 'old' to a 'new' tourism. These case histories, drawn from nine countries in Western Europe, examine these issues. The book is divided into three sections, dealing with political, economic and sociocultural reasons for change.
