Abstract

This chapter considers the Disney film "High School Musical" (2006) in terms of the idea of the "New Girl Hero", represented by the chatracter Gabriella (played by Vanessa Hudgens). It considers how this apparently female-centred narrative with contemporary gender politics is actually strongly rooted in traditional and stereotyped notions of gender. It explores three musical numbers within the film: "Get'cha Head in the Game", "Stick to the Status Quo" and "When There was Me and You". It considers the activities of singing and dancing as queering devices within conventional ideological perceptions of gender, exploited throughout Disney's canon and now treated in a postmodern, self-conscious way by the 21st century film musical.
