Abstract

The paper is a part of a publication printed by the Gdansk University of Technology. The paper deals with a comparison of the English and Polish urban planning strategies in relation to creating a “place” – in the phenomenological sense – as processes which could empower local identity through personal involvement and participation.

The Yatenga museum project is a case study showing a way of incorporating British public consultation techniques in Poland. The project, an example of rammed earth and straw bale construction, will be an important way of creating local identity for the town of Zory, Poland. From the very beginning, the project was not merely focused on “object creation”, but the design methods incorporated various tools that allow incorporating public participation during design. A three-day festival organized in Zory to celebrate the new design was pinnacled by a construction of 1:1 bamboo model of the museum. It became a pioneering way of creating identity of the place. The idea of participation will be carried on further during construction thanks to natural building methods.
