Abstract

Francis Blathwayt was an aristocrat turned parson, and a pioneer in the science of birdwatching.He spent the years 1900 to 1916 in Lincolnshire, and the remainder in the Dorset and Gloucester areas - all of this time as the rector of tiny country parishes. He was repsonsible for the modern County lists in three counties: Somerset, Lincolnshire and Dorset. His work is referenced today. The books examines his life story, with particular reference to the Lincolnshire years; and looks at his contribution to birding and bird writing.
