Abstract

In the focus of policymakers on the concept of a knowledge economy, universities have increasingly been regarded as core knowledge producers. Accordingly governments of all levels have sought to enrol the university in projects to enhance knowledge-based territorial development. Much of this effort has been focused on science and technology based activities, but there is a recent trend to broaden the focus to include cultural and creative industries as important elements of urban attractiveness and value creation. Universities have responded to this situation opportunistically, seeing the potential for new investment which enhances the attractiveness of the university as well as the city. Projects have been devised that link new investments in research and teaching facilities with enhanced access for the public and industry partners. A shift in paradigm from an ivory tower to a more open engaged institution fits alongside new campus extension projects where university activities are embedded in multi-functional, multi-partner urban precincts, where the physical opening of the university is designed to help drive internal cultural change.
