Abstract

A reassessment of the economic, political and social position of the priory of Durham across two centuries. In particular it considers the priory's re-evaluation and negotiation of its rights and liberties in the context of its relationship with its bishop and how far this was part of a wider national reconsideration of the role of bishops in their cathedral chapters
