Abstract

In July 2001 the Government in England published a Strategy on Sexual Health and HIV for which recommends
that general practice and community reproductive health services contribute to managing sexually transmitted
infections (STIs) by assessing risk and offering tests as appropriate.
In 2009 a pilot service was set up in a rural Lincolnshire GP practice in England, offering an enhanced level of
care to that normally seen in GP practices.
The principal aim of the service is to meet the requirements of the local community and surrounding locality. The
specific aims of the service were:
• to widen access opportunities for sexual infection screening and diagnostics for clients in the local area.
• to provide a clinical learning environment where the host-clinicians can develop their theoretical knowledge
of genitourinary medicine for clinical application and explore ways of integrating that with their sexual and
reproductive health practice.
In 2010 the University of Lincoln was commissioned by Lincolnshire Primary Care Trust to conduct a comprehensive
evaluation of this new service. This paper presents the methods and results of the evaluation, and makes
recommendations for the future service delivery.
