Abstract

Reaction of the cluster Ru5C(CO)15 1 with the bidentate nitrogen heterocycles 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and 2,2�-bipyridyl (bipy) in the presence of 1.1 and 2.2 molar equivalents of Me3NO led to a facile metal-metal bond cleavage and a structural change in the cluster to yield the bridged butterfly products Ru5C(CO)14(phen) and Ru5C(CO)14(bipy) respectively as the major products, and the orthometallated derivatives Ru5(μ-H)C(CO)13-(C12H7N 2) and Ru5(μ-H)C(CO)13(C10H7N 2) as the minor product as revealed by spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.
